YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF BY BEING AWARE OF ANY CONTRACTOR WHO:

  • Does not provide a current state license or insurance info

  • Encourages you to do the project without obtaining permits

  • Requires payments in cash and/or the entire job be paid in advance

  • Provides a vague agreement on work to be done

BEFORE HIRING ANY CONTRACTOR:

  • Confirm they are licensed (contact CA State License Board) www.cslb.ca.gov

  • Confirm they are fully insured (general liability & workers' comp)

  • Request a list of references as well as current jobs (take the time to contact references)

  • Make sure all work to be done is specifically outlined in the contract

  • You should receive a payment schedule listing payments & when they are due

We recommend obtaining at least two estimates

Once you have signed a contract and have second thoughts, under CA law you have the right to cancel the agreement within three days & this information MUST BE included in all contracts.
